Folks, PlayLouder's been waiting for what seems like an eternity. The tingling promise of an arena show has turned out to be an empty one, but this evening teenage sensations tATu are here for an instore gig and signing. They've brought with them a collection of sultry pouts, a hit single, a soon-to-be-hit single, a pair of tiny skirts and two pairs of massive boots. Oddly, they've forgotten to pack even one bra.

In accordance with what you may have read elsewhere by now, as they take the stage they look fucking miserable. As miserable as Morrissey, Cobain or Reed, and a million miles from the grinning idiocy of Atomic Kitten and friends. Lena (the ginger one) smiles occasionally, her eyes drawn by the assembled crowd, but Julia (the pretty one, who tonight sports a superb Sonic the Hedgehog hairdo) smiles only when looking at her bandmate and supposed beloved.

Ah yes, there's chemistry between these two girls. As they mime their way through opening track 'All The Things She Said', they hold hands, stroke each others' hair and, after the first chorus, creep teasingly into a kiss. And no, it's not a Hollywood slurp, but a tender, full-lipped job with follow-up smackers.

But in all honesty, the kiss is not the main draw; it's a foregone conclusion from the off, and it's all over within two minutes of tATu appearing onstage. Neither is the draw the girls' live performance, not really. After all, miming their way through two singles and barely dancing is hardly the stuff of legend. But the fact is Lena and Julia ooze attitude.

At the post-gig signing, PlayLouder politely asks the girls to spare a few minutes for a couple of questions. They don't even bother to say no, they just shake their heads in unison and shift their eyes to the next in line. Julia's so bored, she's even drawn a cock on the tablecloth. This in conjunction with the short, mimed set could be extremely disappointing were it not for this: tATu couldn't care less whether we like it or not; we'll take it their way or not at all. And that, dear reader, is more uncompromising, honest and downright punk rock than any guitar-stroking, acne-ridden, noisenik three-chord band could ever be.
