$1.5 million law suit against Tatu. ("Billboard" - USA)

Time of publication: 08.05.2003
(LONDON) - London-based promoter East European Media Group (EEMG) filed suit last week in Moscow High Court against the management of Russian singing duo T.A.T.U., asking for $1.5 million in damages after the cancellation of the act's planned U.K. tour. T.A.T.U. was scheduled to play May 2 and May 6 shows at London's Wembley Arena and a May 4 date at the Manchester Evening News Arena. The dispute began after T.A.T.U.'s Moscow-based management company Neformat canceled the May 6 concert, but demanded the same overall fee for the tour, says Aliona Muchinskaya, the director of Red Square Project, the PR company representing EEMG. Neformat then allegedly said, although one of the girls had a throat infection, she could be forced to perform if EEMG increased its fee. "The organizers said they would never do anything like that and, also, they wouldn't have got the necessary insurance," Muchinskaya says. EEMG, which held a press conference April 30 to apologize for pulling out of the tour at such a late stage, claimed Neformat had made "unachievable technical demands" and raised "numerous obstacles" a few days before the first gig. EEMG's suit asks for damages including marketing, advertising, promotion, and other costs. T.A.T.U.'s debut single, "All the Things She Said," made them the first Russian act to have a U.K. No. 1.
