Heartache of 'lesbian' Eurovision singer Yulia

TATU singer Yulia Volkova lost her baby days before her 18th birthday, her mother has revealed.

Yulia and "lesbian" singing partner Lena Katina were at the height of their fame with their debut single at number one in Britain when she was admitted to a Moscow clinic.

She was recovering from her loss in February when doctors told her that she had a problem with her voice so serious it could end her career.

CLINCH: Yulia and Lena act lesbian

Tonight Yulia and Lena, both 18, will put the heartache behind them when they represent Russia in the Eurovision song contest in Latvia.

Yulia's mother Larissa Volkova revealed that her daughter's management hushed up the pregnancy fearing it would ruin Tatu's lesbian act.

And Yulia was rushed off to Prague on tour a day after losing the baby.

Hair stylist Larissa said: "It was a great worry for us. But Yulia didn't have any serious bleeding and on the second day it was all over.

"My daughter called me from Prague and said that she didn't have any pain and her temperature was normal."

But the strain was evident and Yulia and Lena had a fight in their hotel. Lena was treated at hospital for a bruised and swollen leg.

But some critics believe that the girls are now destined to fade into obscurity. Their second single bombed and their British tour was cancelled after disastrous ticket sales. Yulia is too afraid to have the throat surgery she needs to save her voice.

One Russian paper reported: "Unless Yulia can recover, it raises the question of whether Tatu can carry on."

Eurovision could be their last chance to save Tatu. They have been warned that their headline-grabbing lesbian clinches are banned in front of the live audience amid fears they might deliberately try to get disqualified.

Former Wham! producer Simon Napier-Bell said: "They've done the lesbian thing and people are bored with it. The best thing they could do is to go out in long evening dresses and sing like a couple of Celine Dions.

"The problem is, I don't know if their singing is up to that."

Their producer Ivan Shapovalov has already lined up his next Lolita-style act. But the demise of Tatu may come as a relief to Yulia and Lena.

It is said that Lena has found it hard to maintain their lesbian image, and is under orders to cover up her relationship with boyfriend Sasha.

Two weeks ago they were spotted in a very public, passionate embrace.

Even in their home town Moscow, Gala magazine said of Tatu's Eurovision bid: "Even their victory might become Yulia and Lena's last triumph."
