Caviar, vodka and now rocking lesbians, Hurrah for Russia! (Q Magazine)

Time of publication: 24.03.2003
That Russia's first million-selling pop idols are teen lesbians in school uniforms isn't exactly surprising given the country's dicey post-perestroika porn infatuation. The real shock is that Tatu offer more than just tabloid titillation. Disappointing owners of dirty macs everywhere, their debut album's girl-on-girl action is strictly of the emotional kind. Like single All The Things She Said, with its forbidden love and disapproving parents, the mechanical rock and lascivious pianos come not just with sugar-coated pop, but industrial strength turmoil and alienation. Helium vocals notwithstanding, they even cover The Smith's How Soon Is Now with anguish to spare.

3 out of 5 stars.
