Radio is meant for us and not the other way round

Ivan Shapovalov, the t.A.T.u. producer

The producer of the most successful Russian group told us what he thinks about radio, money and the importance of rotation in general.

- My professional and personal sympathies towards radio stations coincide: if you do what you like the most, it should be only this way. Because t.A.T.u. is in rotation on all radiostations – I love them all. Generally, the role of the radio stations in the artist’s success is exaggerated. It’s not the rotation that is important for the t.A.T.u.’s art, but the other way round. For instance if the songs are good enough, they’ll get the rotation. If a radiostations refuses to buy the song, another one will do it, that’s all. When people say that a young artist see the importance of his/her songs to get into the rotation – it’s not entirely true. It’s important that the artist will be heard and if a radiostation is the best way to do it, so why not? Generally, it’s not the artist who should be looking for a radio station but visa verse. A musician shouldn’t be initially programmed to be liked by the radio stations. Sometimes, the radio is becoming an unnecessary, intermediate link. More over, advertisement and music are always in a conflict. Advertisement is money, music is a sort of non-material and disinterested creation. Those things are united by radio as the best.
