It's hard to be the girls (Vremya Novostei - Russia)

Time of publication: 23.03.2004
Teleproject “Tatu in Podnebesnaya”, the show broadcasting the real-life recording of the duo’s new album, is living it’s last days. This Sunday they’ll show “Podnebesnaya” one last time on TV. In the office of “Neformat” company they said, “The girls entered the deep unconsciousness”. To put it simply – they sabotage the recording process. Because of this, the fate of the long talked about second album is covered with darkness. Different opinions are being expressed, most of the prognoses are pessimistic. The most vulnerable seems to be the idea of making a new repertoire, which, to be honest, is based on taking songs out of nowhere. In “Podnebesnaya” studio almost anyone could have offered Tatu a song. So what - they showed self-tough song writers on the show all the time.

Some “pigs” and “fish” sort of songs written by professionals came along, however, for group Tatu. Besides that, the girls recorded at least two new songs, “Ty soglasna” [“You agree”] and “Belochka” [“Squirrel”]. Typical song type for Tatu. The first one resembles the hit song “Ya soshla s uma” [“I’ve lost my mind”] – slow entrance, explosive guitar sounds during the chorus. The second composition resembles “Polchasa” [“30 minutes”] with it’s poor accompaniment, slow rhythm and it’s thinned out sound. The lyrics, sung with touching “young” voices, are on the edge – something like “It’s hard to be a boy when you are a girl. [...] It’s better if you’ll be a bunny, and I’ll be a squirrel”. The song “Ta soglasna” was only broadcasted on one radio station called “Avtoradio”, despite it’s hit potentials. It is useless to push the song onto more radio stations, make a music video and promote it – before the new album is ready, the promotional strategy cannot be completed properly.

Currently Tatu’s future is hanging in the air, the creator of the group Ivan Shapovalov decided to release under the label “Podnebesnaya” a collection of songs by the artists he likes. Judging from it’s content, and it’s form the album is in itself doesn’t have a format at all. The disk has a track list with the names of songs, but no artist names and group titles. Why? Because, some projects are so new, they don’t even have a name yet: just an idea as a project, that’s all. Part of the material came literally from nowhere: the home-made recordings were sent in my e-mail. No one can answer the question on why it was released at all. Strictly speaking, no one really asks the questions like this, since Ivan Shapovalov is famous for his paradoxical thinking and not standard decisions. Nonetheless, the album includes compositions by some famous names as well as some interesting and fairly distinct compositions.

First of all, of course are Tatu with their song “Belochka”. Also included is Ivan Demyan’s new compositions – he is the leader of group “7B”, once known for their hit song “Molodye Vetra” [“Young winds”]. Weird as it is, the sphere of interest of Ivan Shapovalov included Masha Makarova, a singer that almost disappeared from view, once the leader of popular group “Masha and Medvedi” [“Masha and the bears”] (“Lyubochka” [Small name for Lyuba/Lyudmila – Kate]). Also there is a girl from Middle Asia, performing a nice world-beat composition. Also there is a good singer from Tallinn, Katya Nechaeva (the style of who resembles “new Tatu”). There is some formation under the name «Moscow’s free orchestra» with song «Volodya Putin», in which the singer offers the title personage to smoke some weed and talk, «how we will rearrange Russia». In itself the song, which is seen as very provocative and scandalous by the authors, is slack, boring and unsurprising. The rest is as expected, resembles of Tatu and abnormal lyrics.
