Tatu-Lena Katina: I’ll quit smoking and will give birth to a baby-girl too.

Time of publication: 02.10.2004
On Monday, one of the Tatu-girls turned 20. The day before she decided to break her vow of silence and to tell the whole truth about the group and herself.

This week group Tatu once again was in the center of everyone’s attention. First of all, Yulia Volkova finally became a mom. Secondly, ex-producer Elena Kiper introduced her new project, which smells like a clone of Tatu. A thirdly, some rumors were flying around claming that while Yulia was recovering from the delivery in the clinic, the red-headed Tatu-girl was actively recording her solo-album and preparing to get married.

We met with Lena Katina on the eve of her birthday.

“Shapovalov was intentionally killing the group!”

KP: Lena, your sudden break-up with your producer Ivan Shapovalov gave rise to many rumors. What really happened?

Lena: The break-up with Shapovalov was not positive nor negative. It’s a new chapter. I don’t have any complaints, personally. On contrary, I am very grateful to Ivan Shapovalov and Elena Kiper for their hard work and our success. I still think that Shapovalov is a genius. As to our break-up with him...

I got an idea that after our global success he lost interest in us and started to intentionally kill the project. We were supposed to record a new album, “Tatu in Podnebesnaya”. Everyone knows what happened next. People were constantly either high on drugs or drunk – and no work was done. It’s either this personal is missing, or that; we were recording and not recording at the same time.

I’m not excluding the possibility that Shapovalov wanted the project completely gone, so that no one knew where the Tatu-girls were. Maybe he was afraid that the second album will be worse then the first one. It’s not nice to fall from the Olimpic Mountain.

I didn’t want to say this, but I will. What happened to Tatu and Vanya Shapovalov owes a lot to the fact that a lot of people were “sticking” around us. They surrounded Vanya, talked nice to him while offering him drugs. So it turns out that Vanya went through fire and water, but couldn’t resist the “smoke”. Fame changes and ruins people.

“When Yulia recovers from the delivery, we’ll record a new album’

KP: Didn’t fame effect you?

Lena: Of course. At first I was sick with “star illness”, but recovered very soon. Thanks to mom and my friend Nastya. As soon as I started to “raise my nose”, they quickly gave me a reality check and the illness was gone like it never came.

KP: What’s going on with you, creativity wise?

Lena: While Yulia was pregnant, I recorded some demo songs for Tatu. After Yulia recovers, we’ll go to LA or U.K. to record our new album.

Besides that, this summer I actively prepared and recorded my solo-album. It’ll be produced by my father. But I can’t say anything about the album’s concept yet, I’m still searching for one. I know one thing for sure, it’s won’t be like Tatu. I’ll try to find something fresh in terms of image, too.

KP: Aren’t you forbidden to change your appearance in the contract with Tatu?

Lena: No. They just chose what best suited me, and I agreed. Although, I am planning some changes now. My natural hair-color is slowly going to take over the red-head I am now. I’m originally golden-light-blown.

“I wouldn’t want to play in “Night Patrol”, maybe in ‘Pokrovski gates’!”

KP: There were rumors that you were offered a role in “Night Patrol”…

Lena: Bullshit. Even if it was so, I would have refused.

KP: Why?

Lena: It’s not my thing. Of course it’d be awesome to star in a movie, but I’d rather go for something like “Pokrovski gates” or “Office romance”. I’m all for romance.

I liked how “Night Patrol” was made. But I think that it has a very strong effect on the mind of young people. For example, my 12 year old sister and all her friends think that the forces of light are better then those of dark, ‘cause they kill the “baddies”... How can someone that kills be good? So now they think that if you kill a bad person, then you are a good person. Total gibberish.

KP: Would you kill someone threatening you or your family?

Lena: Depends on the situation. I probably would in this case. (Knocks on wood.)

KP: Are you superstitious?

Lena: No. it’s just a habit. I believe in God and a person’s consciousness. As a future psychiatrist, I think that a persona’s consciousness is what guides him in this world.

“My friend accepts my hysterics”

KP: The rumor about you getting married are very popular in the media right now…

Lena: Damn, people... As soon as I am in a serious relationship with a guy, they assume I’m getting married.

Andrei and I have been together for nearly one and a half years. He’s a law student. We’re the same age. We met in a night club. Kept in touch. He visited me everyday at 11 at night, and we sat and talked in the car ‘till 7 in the morning. And we didn’t notice how we be came very close.

KP: Does he gets jealous of your fans?

Andrei rarely gets jealous. As to me, sometimes I can start a hysteria over something like this. But it’s just for fun, so he wouldn’t relax too much.

I trust Andrei, and I know that he loves me. By the way, look what he got me a few days ago… (Lena lift the sleeve of the black blouse and coquettishly demonstrates a golden bracelet in a form of a chain.) I just love gold, rings, and belly-button piercings.

KP: Do you have a few flirting tricks?

Lena: I think that women are born with them. I don’t use anything specific when I flirt. Maybe because no one ever let me speak up, and I just shut myself down. The only person that I let into my life is Anrei.

KP: Do you see Andrei as your future husband.

Lena: I do, but I’m not sure yet.

KP: Not sure of what?

Lena: About whether or not we can live together. When you love someone and live separately it’s one thing. And when you collide with each other on daily basis at home, it’s a totally different thing. So we decided to live together for a while, and then decide about the marriage. But we’re not living together at the moment. My mom will be struggling without me, and I myself don’t want to do all the house chores. I have to “grow” a little more before we will decide.

“I started thinking about my own children since 14”

KP: Do you plan your life or do you go with the flow?

Lena: I plan it. I will stay in show-biz until I’m 27. Then I want to do charity work. But that’ll depend on my life at that point. I love children and I want to do all I can to help them.

KP: Do you think about having your own children?

Lena: (Giggles.) I started thinking about that since I was 14. I want a boy and a girl. I’m not planning on when I’m gonna have them. When God decides I must have a child, I will. I will never go through an abortion. But I decided for myself that when I will have a child, I’ll quit smoking a year before hand. Let the body cleanse itself, and then I’ll get pregnant.

KP: As far as I know you bought a two-room apartment recently...

Lena: Yes, and I’m renting it out at the moment. I want to buy something bigger in the future, with room with different styles: modern, Asian, Barocco. But that’s not soon.

KP: What are you like at home?

Lena: I like to rearrange the furniture and my room is always a mess. I don’t like cooking. After a hard day I relax with a glass of red wine. I listen to the radio at home. I work out sometimes. What else? I’m normal at home. I wear a track suit, I like the smell of male perfume. But when it comes to a formal event I dress accordingly.

“We’re not friends with Volkova, we’re sister”

KP: They say that you never came to visit Yulia Volkova in the clinic. What happened between you two?

Lena: We’re OK with Yulia. I miss her. I didn’t go to the clinic because Yulia asked not to bother her. After she more or less recovers from the delivery, I’ll visit her with presents. I bought her baby girl a little chair, on which she can sit and eat after she grows up a little.

KP: Are you going to be the baby’s godmother?

Lena: Yulia didn’t offer. I think that the baby’s godmother will be her best friend.

KP: Aren’t you best friends?

Lena: No. We are “sister”. We’ve been through a lot together with Yulia, so we feel like relatives now. Of course we argue over small things, but that’s no big deal. The most important thing is that we can’t without each other.

KP: What are your plans for the near future?

Lena: Work on my solo-album, of course. Before that I have exams at the University. I’m going to the library tomorrow to study...
