MK Rendezvous: Yulia Volkova: "I'm moving to the States"

After Yulia and Lena had left their producer Ivan Shapovalov and their ship was set for a free sail, mass media gave up the idea of any future for Tatu. Meanwhile neither Volkova nor Katina thought to quit. They simply decided to get in charge over all business regarding their group. It looks like it went not bad at all. During their period of silence, the girls recorded a new worth attention album in LA. Yullia Volkova and Lena Katina are going on tour to promote the album soon. Aside the recording, Yulia managed to give birth to a daughter.

When Tatu came back to Moscow from America they quite understandably caught attention of journalists again. A constant restrain affected the girls as when we met them at the appointed place, Yulia curled herself on the leather sofa. Lena sat stoically beside her. Of course, I asked how they were, as I noticed that Yulia's voice got a sexy rasp.

"All that I planned, crushed"

Yulia: - Frankly speaking, I got a little tired but it shouldn't affect our conversation. As for raspy voice, yes, it is like that now…
Lena (laughs): "Yes, we have this voice after having given birth!"

Yulia, tell us what changed after you got a baby?
Yulia: - I don't know. The family simply got one more member.
Lena: - Oh, give it a break! She became more feminine. She was such a tomboy before.
Yulia: I became more responsible.
Lena (laughs): - Thanks God, she became more serious and calmer!

Yulia, do you spend a lot of time with Vika?
Yulia: - A little, I confess, it's too little. There's no possibility to spend more. By the way, she has already started to talk. She tells me about her life on her language. It sounds something like "ta-ta, bu-ee, dee-dee, boo-dee…"

Whom does the baby spend most of her time with?
Lena: She has two nannies plus a grandmother and a grandfather.

Lena, didn't you think of a baby too?
Lena: I've thought of it for a while now but let it be as it will be. Everything will turn out by itself when the time is here. I don't like to plan over it a lot. I planned my life when I had a boyfriend but after two years together we parted. It happened last winter. I was sad and upset then for a long time because everything that I had planned just crashed. Right now I have a new love as Yulia does. As for a wedding and a baby - I don't plan that far.

"We are not lesbians, we just love each other"

Ladies, for how many years are you together?
Yulia and Lena: - Ten! Everything began with "Neposidi".

Didn't you get tired of each other yet?
Lena: -Not at all.

Do you often argue?
Yulia: - We don't have quarrels but we may have disagreements.

Professional or private disagreements?
Yulia: - Both professionally and privately.

Do you remember the time when you were in "Neposedi"?
Lena: - Of course we do!
Yulia: - It's cool to have a good laugh about past things sometimes. There were lots of funny situations, but please, don't ask us to tell you about that time. Deal?

Deal! Then I'll ask about something else. Weren't you afraid to stay in a shadow away from all spotlights for sometime?
Yulia: - No! We needed this break as air. We got really very tired of all that time.
Lena: - Yes. Both – got tired and got life circumstances. Yulia gave birth plus we parted from our producer. That's why we decided to take a break to come back with new strength.

Have you left Ivan for good or is he still participating in your project?
Yulia: - No he doesn't but it doesn't mean that we are in a state of war with him. No, we do see him sometimes.

The story of Tatu is a story of two girls…
Lena: …who simply love each other but they are not lesbian. Don't start this!

Are you going to cultivate this image in the future too?
Lena: - We haven't stopped loving each other yet! (Both laugh.) What do you mean by an image? Well, we won't kiss on stage anymore maybe.
Yulia: - Or maybe we will. Who knows!

You were accused of all possible things - of demoralisation of British schoolgirls. Are you planning to go on with shocking people with your controversial behaviour?
Yulia: We don't make anything up beforehand. It's all spontaneous. We do it as it goes.
Lena: We just behave as we want.

Aren't you concealing something here? For instance, "F*** the war!" print on your tops put practically entire planet into a state of shock. As we know, this idea wasn't spontaneous…
Yulia: Oh yes. We came up with this idea together with Ivan two years ago.

"Love me blonde"

One more question about the image, Yulia. Quite unexpectedly, you got your hair cut very short and dyed it blonde. Why such drastic changes?
Yulia: - I think I've always had this length of my hair but people pay attention now because I dyed hair blonde. I have an answer to such questions. I dyed my hair blonde because I got tired of staying brunette!

So, it isn't an idea of your new producer?
Yulia: We don't have any producers. We decide and do everything ourselves now. We took everything in our own hands.

Lena, don't you want to change your hairstyle too?
Lena: - I would change but it's not possible with my type of hair (Touches her fabulous curly red hair.)
Yulia wakes up (to Lena): - Look here, let's make dreads on you?
Lena raises her voice: I don't want dreads! I don't want to destroy my hair.
Yulia: You'll look super cool!
Lena: And if I want to get hair brushed? What will happen then? To shave off all my hair?
Yulia: Wow! You'll be so sweet if b-a-l-d, ha-ha-ha!"

It was the time to interfere into this friendly discussion:
Girls, don't argue now.
Lena: - Why is she teasing me with her dreads? I like to touch my curls. If I get tired of curls, I can let my hair get straighten once in two month.

"We didn't know who Takeshi Kitano was"

Last time you were on the top of the world charts, you toured Japan and were invited to see Takeshi Kitano in his studio. What was the most memorable in this meeting?
Lena: - Nothing.

Have you seen his movies?
Lena: - No!

So, you don't know his work at all?
Lena: - We didn't that time plus I went there alone. Yulia fell sick so I was one for two. To all that, I had to play ping-pong with Kitano.

Do you play ping-pong well?
Lena: - No, I can't say that I often practice. The times I want to play ball, I take a racket and play. It's so funny! With another words, it was a spontaneous thing.

If to speak about today. Why does your album have two different titles? It's called "Dangerous And Moving" for the West and "Ludi-Invalidi" – for Russia.
Lena: - "Dangerous And Moving" is a wider definition. As for "Ludi-Invalidi", the trick with the title could be understood only by Russians. These "Ludi" (people) are "invalidi" (disabled) morally. Americans don't generally have this word combination.

Do you divide audience to Russian and American?
Lena: - Nope!
Yulia: - Though, all people are different. We do behave differently in Russia because we know what will be the reaction. Everything is slightly different in the West.
Lena: - The concept is the same but it has different packages.

Is there the same number of tracks in English as in Russian on the disc?
Yulia: - English version doesn't have some songs those are on the Russian album and vice versa.
Lena: - We release two albums: one is in English and another one in Russian.

Are you hoping for the same success as you had before?
Lena: We are not hoping, we are sure of that!

To get married in America

What do you do else in Moscow except meeting journalists?
Yulia: - We rest, we meet friends, we go clubbing. We enjoy our last calm days. Got to go to America soon and after we have a promo-tour to Europe, Asia and America.

How long time did you record the album in the States?
Yulia: - Half of a year. I'll tell you a secret that I'm moving there in about a year.
Lena: - I enjoy LA a lot too but I can live only in Moscow.
Yulia: - You'll see after – she's going to move there too. It's getting worse and worse with each year here. You'll see what happens in six months.
Lena: - I won't go!
Yulia: - Fine, then you'll move to a village.
Lena: - Why a village? It's Moscow – the capital of our motherland, hell!

Yulia, are you going to take your baby on tour with you?
Yulia: - No, the baby is too small. She's turning 1 year on September 23rd. There won't be any time to spend with the baby either.
Lena: - Who is going to take care of her there? We'll be working as bloody slaves on tour.

Lena, how are you going to work together if Yulia leaves for the States?
Lena: - We basically work in America now.
Yulia: - She's going to visit me and I – her! That way!

Do you have friends over there?
Yulia: - Of course we have. Both Russian and American. Besides, I have my darling there. He's originally from here (Russia). His name is Tigran. He's been living in America for 13 years now. He is a businessman. I'm simply sure that he's my real love. He's a grown up person. After Pasha I understood that relationships with young men are not serious.

So it goes to…
Yulia: - …to a serious thing. (Laughs.)
Lena: - Thanks God!
Yulia: - The main thing is that Tigran is very kind with my daughter.

Where did you meet him?
Yulia: - It was in a restaurant. He is a friend of Lena's parents.
Lena: - And after 15 minutes they have already been kissing! Can you imagine that?!
Yulia: - Yes, it was love from first sight! My new life has started now!
