Tatu's image - Real or fake? (KP - Sweden)

Time of publication: 08.07.2003

The Russian popduo Tatu have gotten alot of attention by acting in love with eachother. But - the question is if it's all just made up in order to sell more records.

Tatu are one of the biggest popgroups right now. Their debut album "200km/h in the wrong lane" has sold about 3 million copies around the world.

In the video "All the things she said", it's clearly shown that was has become the groups distinguishing feature is two teenage girls kissing eachother.

Since then, it has been said in almost all articles about Tatu that Julia Volkova and Lena Katina are lesbians (girls who fall in love with girls).

Before Eurovision in Riga earlier this year, several newspapers and magazines tried to outdo eachother with headlines like "Tatu are threatening to have sex on tv" and "Tatu want to perform without clothes". Apparently the girls have also said that they sometimes have sex with their fans after the concerts (wtf? - QB).

Good for the sales

The problem is that nobody knows if all of this is true. Accordning to the newspaper Aftonbladet, both of the girls have boyfriends.

Aftonbladet has also written that Julia has been together with the group's manager (mistake (he's producer now) - QB). And that in fact he is the one who has made the girls' relationship up - in order to sell more records.

KP (the name of the magazine - QB) called Tatu's record company Universal to get an interview with the duo. We didn't get to talk to the girls themselves, but with Lee Raita on the record company.

-There was alot of attention when they kissed in the video, but if Tatu have sold more records because of that is hard to say. But of course, it has gotten alot more attention in the media, and that's usually good for the sales.

Are Julia and Lena lesbians or is it just an image?

-Honestly, I don't know. The times they have been here, I haven't been able to tell. But we have never gone out and said that they were lesbians.

Well then why have the newspapers written so much about that Tatu are lesbians?

Well, it's because it is "good news", articles that make people buy the newspaper. Expressen (Swedish magazine - QB) is the one that has been writing about Tatu the most in Sweden. First there was an article about Tatu's lesbian relationship, then they "revealed" the fact that the whole thing is fake.

- The revealing of the lesbian image being fake was bigger news than about the fact that the girls were lesbians, says Robert Borjesson, entertainment chief editor of Expressen.

He doesn't think that Tatu's sexuality has been the reason to why Tatu are famous.

-They would have been big anyway, because they are talented. But maybe they wouldn't have gotten this big if there wasn't so much talk about their image
