Showing Complaints & Interventions Report for t.A.T.u VIDEO
Channel: Various channels
Date & time: December 2002 – February 2003
Category: Other Taste & Decency
Complaint from: 4 viewers
Background
Most dedicated music channels played a music video, 'All The Things She Said,' by a young Russian female duo, t.A.T.u. The single reached number one in the charts in early February.
Issue
Some viewers objected to scenes in the music video in which the two young women, dressed in mock-school uniform, kissed.
Assessment
The ITC accepts that the depiction of homosexual or lesbian relationships on television is an issue which often divides viewer opinion. Such relationships are, with some constraints, legal, nevertheless some viewers do not want to see such images on their screens, and are particularly concerned about children's exposure to them. The ITC noted criticisms in the press of the possibly cynical or exploitative aspect of this particular video, in its portrayal of two attractive young women, who reportedly are not lesbians themselves. But as nothing beyond kissing was involved here, the ITC concluded that it would not be justified in pursuing the matter with broadcasters.
Conclusion
The Programme Code was not breached. |
