AFTER years of strenuously resisting all things Russian, American has surrendered with a sigh to a Russian group - those lovable little pop sluts t.A.T.u.
t.A.T.u are big in America and getting bigger. Their combination of catchy tunes and titillating lesbianism is wowing the US.
For all the tail-wagging of Britney Spears and her imitators, this is a strait-laced and sexually conservative country. Britney is as conventional in her own butt-shaking way as Doris Day.
But t.A.T.u are something else. They may have looked like just some more mindless Eurotrash when they were on Top Of The Pops, but in an American context they look like something much more radical. The girls snog on late-night TV shows such as Jay Leno (despite being warned not to). They stroke each other on daytime kiddie shows (while the audience hoots and gawps). They snarl at American journalists (who get snotty, but give them acres of coverage).
"The group is the product of the sexual free-for-all that ensued after the fall of the Soviet Union where sex, officially, did not exist," the New York Times solemnly reported.
In Europe, t.A.T.u seemed like just another couple of pop tarts, a duo of cheeky girls wrapped up in some contrived controversy.
In America, they are perceived as nothing less than the morning after the Cold War.
Relax, Uncle Sam - the Russians are not coming. They are just faking an orgasm.
