Rush In For Russian Glory! (SportingLife.Com)

Time of publication: 29.03.2003
It may still be almost two months until the Eurovision Song Contest takes place at the Skonto Olympic Hall in Latvia, but the news of a star performer makes for a very appetising ante-post bet.

Coral have been the first firm to post prices on the event, but already they have had to slash the odds on Russia to land the spoils.

Why? Well, lesbian pop combo tATu have been confirmed as the entrants for Russia.

The duo have courted controversy in this country since their arrival on the music scene, but their debut single 'All The Things She Said' has already proved to be the smash of the 2003 so far.

When Coral opened their market, the duo were rated as 6/1 shots to win the competition on May 24, but within hours that disappeared to leave them as 7/2 chances.

Our advice? Snap this up as soon as possible.

Well-known performers may not own the greatest of records in the Eurovision Song Contest (especially UK entrants), but tATu are arguably the hottest property in Europe right now and the public phone voting would surely guarantee Russia victory for the first time ever.

Eighteen-year-old Julia Volkova and Lena Katina will perform a song called 'Ne ver, ne bojsia', which translates as 'No faith, no belief' and they are confident of winning.

They recently told the Sun newspaper: "No one should be scared of us but we're going to win Eurovision.

"We wanted to do this because we are Russians body and soul. We want to blast everything that's gone before with our sexy act."

Their success was a massive surprise when they released debut single 'All The Things She Said', but it raced to the number one spot all over the continent, including the European Top 40 chart and the World Airplay Top 100.

It has lingered around the charts for two months and their risque antics have ensured their place in the tabloid newspapers on an almost-daily basis.

It all builds and adds to their popularity, helping them take the single to number one in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, amongst others.

Second release 'Not Gonna Get Us' is just hitting airplay around Europe at the moment and it's likely to be dwelling at the top of charts all around the continent right up until May 24, keeping them in the public consciousness for the big day.

Have a small covering wager at 7/2 on the Russians finishing second or third, just in case the political voting causes a major shock, but hurry whatever you do, as the prices are sure to disappear very quickly.
