Eurovision Shock As Tatoo Keep It Clean (Sky News - UK)

Time of publication: 25.05.2003
Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. have shocked Eurovision Song Contest viewers by not living up to their raunchy reputation. The teenage schoolgirls, who claim to be lesbian lovers, had threatened to stage an "outrageous" performance of Don't Believe, Don't Be Afraid.Organisers had warned them that if their show was too explicit, it would be ripped off the air and replaced with a sanitised rehearsal version.

But the 18-year-olds appeared on stage in jeans and T-shirts, singing in chaste fashion before slipping quietly off stage.

The sulky pair were threatened with disqualification when they stormed off stage as they practised, complaining of a sore throat, but they eventually carried on.

Then at Thursday's rehearsal in the Latvian capital, Riga, they were in trouble for turning up in jeans rather than their full stage costume.

But the jeans were the full stage costume, which they refused to reveal at the time.

British hopes rested on Liverpudlian duo Jemini - singers Chris Cromby and Gemma Abbey - with their song Cry Baby.

It was written by composer Martin Isherwood, head of music at Sir Paul McCartney's fame school, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

Thousands of people demonstrated in Latvia on the eve of the song contest angry at proposals to force Russian-language schools to teach in Latvian.
