Dykes of the Month: tATu (GayDarGirls.Com)

Time of publication: 08.02.2003
You know you're onto a good thing when Richard Madeley, of cosy TV couple Richard and Judy fame, wants to ban you for being a bad influence on the youth of today. Madeley isn`t alone in his condemnation, a group of Russian MPs have attacked the group for promoting paedophilia and for being an example of the "cruelty and depravity emanating from today`s television." They are currently busy tabling a bill that will punish people who distribute such "pornography."

tATu seem unperturbed by this attention, after all they are of majority age which makes a nonsense of the paedophilia allegations. Despite reports of throat problems and cancelled promotional trips, Julia (also known as Yulia) Volkova and Lena Katina have rocketed their way to the tops of the charts in most countries that have pop charts, including the UK.

No one is disputing that tATu are anything but a blatantly manufactured pop duo, produced by the legendary recording impresario Trevor Horn. The band itself is the creation of Ivan Shapovalov, a former child psychologist and filmmaker, who has managed to create a version of teenaged lesbianism that appeals to everyone from dirty old men to record-buying teenyboppers, and even lesbians themselves. Their manager has admitted that the girls` sexuality is mostly a marketing ploy. Moreover, whilst Julia and Lena have said that they enjoy the ambiguity in their image, they have boyfriends tucked away at home, and intend to marry and have children.

Hopefully tATu are laughing all the way to the bank now that their single, 'All The Things She Said' is holding the number one spot in the UK charts. After all, they`re just cashing in on 15 minutes of fame, using the oldest trick in the book to sell their otherwise forgettable music.

T.A.T.U., February salutes you!
