A Review of Tatu's Debut Album ("Stop" - Slovenia)

Time of publication: 21.03.2003
One of the biggest and most recent musical sensations, at least on the European market, are Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, Russian pop duo T.A.T.U. Their song and video All The Things She Said, which overtook radio and TV stations with fairly open homosexual declaration by two young girls, was definetly their best promotion move. Most credit goes to Ivan Shapovalov, the man behind the scenes, who is the productional and directional godfather of duo T.A.T.U.'s musical expression. The record combines trashing guitar samples (Not Gonna Get Us, Show Me Love) and electronic disco rythmes (modern version of 80's europop) and places teenage vocals in a depressing mix of love, yearning and moral preachings. There is enough calculating so that each verse and arrangement sets this record apart from other competitive projects from their MTV peers. The girls have attractive vocals which are, despite cynical remarks that they sound like A-HA going 200 km/h, capable of charming the remake of How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths. Authors Morrisey and Marr of course thanked them for dividents from the copyrights and congratulated the girls.

Quality: 3,5 out of 5 (which is relativly high for this magazine)
