Lena in a company of a young man
On Saturday (24.05.2003), before the contest final, at about 18:00, Lena Katina – a singer from the scandalous duo t.A.T.u. left hotel De Rom. She squatted for a while to give autographs to the fans who recognised the red-hair world celebrity. A short walk before the contest final was almost unnoticed by anyone, which differed from the latest public appearances followed by an increased attention from the press and the bodyguards.
A PD’s photographer witnessed how Lena, after she gave the last autograph, took tenderly a hand of a tall young man and left in the hotel’s direction. Having noticed the camera, Lena suddenly recoiled from her company and left a distance between them. We should remind you that a whole bunch of foreign media companies questioned the nature of the duo’s lesbian relationship, pointing from time to time, that the girls had possibly boyfriends home in Moscow. No one though had enough success to prove it. PD got to know that this secret young fellow, whose hand Lena is holding, is a member of the Russian delegation and his name is Alexandr. To the question about newly taken pictures of the tender gestures, Alexandr threw shortly, that such tenderness was normal between all member of the Russian delegation. Nonetheless, the shots return us to the same old question – are Yulia and Lena really lesbians or it’s just a PR stunt to gain cheap popularity.

Secret visits of t.A.T.u.’s
The most scandalous participant of Eurovision 2003 – a Russian duo t.A.T.u. regularly saw a doctor during their stay in Riga. According to our information, Yulia Volkova arrived to Riga with already swollen vocal cords.
A visit to ARS
It’s necessary to tell though, that such unpleasant details have been hidden from mass media by all means. Nonetheless, PD got to know that the very first to a doctor was done by the girls just a few hours after their memorable arrival by train to Riga. Their first “run” from the Hotel De Roma (where the price for the double room where the girls stayed was $300 per night) was done in a company of their concert manager Leonid Dzjunik. Having quickly gotten into a black S-class Mercedes with a registration number JJ-77, the rising stars began their first brief sightseeing. The limousine accelerated into the direction of Valdemar Street. Having made a few circles in the centre of the capital, this black iron horse finally stopped at the entrance of a building on Skolas Street, where a private clinic ARS was located.
To the doctors, holding hands
As it seems, Yulia and Lena didn’t feel at ease in that clinic – so they were making their way through the corridors of the clinic holding each other’s hands. Having found door # 237, where Gunta Zakke (laryngologist and phoniator of the Latvian opera) having her practices, the girls entered the room. PD found out that the girls discussed questions regarding their forthcoming concerts and got a portion of news from their concert manager Mr. Dzjunik, which they haven’t seen for a long time. Later, Gunta Zakke told to our reporter that she did a videoscopic test on Yulia’s vocal cords. So the star client could witness the condition of her own vocal cords on the monitor. The specialist refused to comment Yulia’s condition using the doctor’s ethics.
A box with medicine
One woman from the t.A.T.u.’s stab commented in our private conversation, that the girls are seeing a doctor in every city they have a show. At the same time, she said that both the girls and their vocals are fine. The coming events questioned those delightful statements of the Russian delegation. On the way back from the clinic, Lena held not a one box of medicine. Yulia had nothing in her hands though. (it’s not a secret that the medicine is meant for her, -PD). A few hours later, when the girls appeared for the first rehearsal, it was heard distinctively, that the vocal part of the Russian representatives leave much to be desired. At the press conference the girls, with their free and spontaneous style, accused bad lights, bad stage and bad sound for their misfortune during the first rehearsal.
A surgery is an option!?
According to Iolanta Gulbe – a vocal tutor who took care of Yulia’s and Lena’s vocal aspects during the Eurovision, Yulia came to Riga having already had swollen vocal cords (right side). “It may happen when the cords are overloaded. Now Yulia has to see a doctor every day and receive treatment out of various medicine cocktails.” – Iolanta said. From her words, she heard that the doctors, who took care of Yulia’s throat before, didn’t exclude a surgery as an option. All the time before the final, Iolanta paid her attention mostly to Lena’s voice, giving the possibility for Yulia to rest her vocal cords. The tutor admitted that both girls have well trained voices. She gave a prognosis that by Saturday, everything would be fine with Yulia’s voice.

Kirkorov is spending the night together with t.A.T.u.
Our source from the Riga’s police department informed us that on the night from Friday to Thursday the eccentric Russian pop-star Philip Kirkorov set a real auto rally on the capital’s streets. In a conversation to PD, Kirkorov has denied this information, stating that he spent the last night in t.A.T.u.’s company.
After the party, arranged by the Russian Ambassador in Latvia Igor Studennikov, Kirkorov and his favourite – Ukranian singer Olexandr went to the central parts of the city where they set on with a real race in a sports car. According to witnesses, both singers were riding the same car. First Olexandr was at the steering wheel, then his place was taken by the king of the Russian pop. Having made a few laps, the drivers returned the car to its owner and went to Hotel De Rom, where both Russian and Ukranian delegation stayed. Kirkorov, which was a part of the Ukranian delegation, stayed in the hotel Grand Palace. It’s necessary to mention that despite of speeding by the Eastern stars, the police didn’t take any measures. When PD tried to find out whether this event took place or not, Kirkorov commented:
- It’s all nonsense. I spent the whole night, until 7 am, in the company of t.A.T.u.’s. I didn’t take part in any street race.
After those night sittings, one of the t.A.T.u. singers Yulia Volkova couldn’t take part in the rehearsals a day after, because of the health problems. PD witnessed that a very warm relashions have been formed between Kirkorov and t.A.T.u. – Philip was not only once spotted in a company of Lena and Yulia, including a moment after the final when “bronze medallists” went to the bar to chill themselves with cold champagne. It was only Yulia who drank the campaign having these big problems with her voice.
