History mystery: Tatu's school uniforms

Time of publication: 19.06.2005
Andrey Drykin could reach the heights where his co-citizens failed to climb. He is the only Russian whose name is in the International fashion catalogue – Le Book. He created the images of Gwyneth Palthrow, Milla Jovovich, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Evangelista, amongst others. He was styling anchors of Reuters, CNN and Channel One Russia, and setting up photosession themes for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour.

Tatu is my pie

– Who of the Russian stars did you work with?

– During five years I was designing disc covers for Nadezhda Kadysheva. I worked with Politsiya Nravov, Ivanushki International, Natalia Vetlitskaya and Kristina Orbakaite. I’ve designed school uniforms for Tatu

– Designer Masha Tsigul states that it’s her who styled Tatu Where the kilt and shirts her creations?

– Nonsense! That happened during my vacation in Moscow – summer 2000. One day a phone rang in our studio. It was Lena Kiper calling. I had worked with Lena before in the Russian department of Reuters. She worked as a reporter there and I was styling their anchors. Once Lena told me:

"We got a new project here. We are shooting a video in a week and a half. We’ve got girls, we’ve got music, but we don’t have any visual imagery. We tried several stylists but none of them suited us".

I went to see them: talked to them and listened to their music. I suggested two styles: teenage jeans style "a-la-hippy", because it was very fashionable in the West then, and school uniforms. I approached Ivan Shapovalov with these ideas, who was their producer. We agreed on school uniforms: kilts and white shirts with ties. Right on the same afternoon, we went to the House of Fabric to choose fabric for the skirts. This project has very many details, that are only known to those who were directly involved with this project.

Why, for instance, do the girls and extras have different ties? The answer is – we simply reinforced ties with glue because while shooting the girls were showered and under such horrible conditions, a normal tie wouldn’t be enough hold enough resistance. Why, for instance, did the girls have different shirts? The answer is that we simply couldn’t find two of the same kind. We were wandering in circles at Shelkovsky market a few days before the shooting - Vanya Shapovalov, Yulia, Lena and I were looking for the shirts for the video and white, I beg your pardon to mention it, underwear because it had to be visible in the video.

– Don’t you have copyright in such cases?

– What copyright would you be talking about in our country, especially at that time? Tatu is the most commercially successful Russian project and the visual aspect of the band is like a delicious pie. Naturally, everyone wants a piece of this pie. I don’t want any, because if we were to look at the whole picture, this whole pie would belong to me.
