Tatu – When Opposites Meet

They are not hippies, and they are not punks: they are Tatu. Two ageless teenagers—Julia (the brunette) and Lena (the redhead)—are mad for each other; they are two crazy schoolgirls that steel trucks and have no complexes. They were in a children's band "Neposedi", where their musical future lied, but only Lena stayed a little while longer then Julia, who was expelled from the group for "inappropriate behavior".

Being chosen from thousands of other girls who also went for the group casting, these two girls threw a few ideas to the producers about how to start a craze. Now they are aiming for the West, after the failure of another Russian singer, Alsou, who also took aim there. They are teaching how and who to love, Russian-style. Or, that in Russia, we have different kinds of love.

But, to be honest, nobody really believes that Lena and Julia actually love each other. And even if someone did believe, there is a lingering doubt. Think about it, at first the project created to project the image of "Japanese lesbians". But the idea of sexy schoolgirls—lesbians—appealed to the producers.

So, the love was "arranged"... "Absolutely not," protest the girls, shouting over one another. They are, according to their story, old school friends, and have always had a special tender feeling towards each other. "We've always wanted to sing together, and this dream has come true. During this time, we became so close, that we feel more then friendship for one another," shares Julia. Actually, the Tatu girls enjoy exploring topics on "love". At their concerts, a lot of girls spontaneously hug and kiss each other, while watching Lena and Julia. But again, there is a rumor going about that all Tatu's fans are sexually unsatisfied.

Lena and Julia were preconceived to be two opposites. To differ from Lena, Julia's hair was cut and dyed black. But the fact that Lena was a bit fat was a problem for the producers: she had to lose ten kilos. So, now, the girls wear same-sized clothing. But due to this reason, the girls constantly fight over the same skirts or tops. On a side note, when fighting, Julia feels free to use all sorts of swear words on her friend, while Lena chooses to keep quiet. But, these are superfluous details. Although the girls are different, they live together. Not idealistically, but still.

Julia is a bit of a "tomboy": she loves to drive the car, do sports, and wear boxers for men. The last one is a fact, since Tatu have a habit of performing in their underwear. Lena, on the other hand, is a romantic person, she daydreams and only thinks about life. But the moment some injustice happens, Lena has her say in it! "This totally infuriates me. When I see unfair judgments being made, I always fight." Either way, both have strong characters.

We don't know if this is true or not, but Lena tends to be jealous of Julia during their concerts; Julia spends too much time with the fans. Of course, the concerts are a completely different matter. "Stripping" is not Tatu's only trick. There is a large artificial penis (dildo) that acts as an ornament on stage. Also, the concert hall is full of flying condoms that were blown up by the fans. And of course, a large amount of bras. When asked if they are told to use condoms, the girls replied, "We have nothing to put them on."

Being in Europe now, the girls try to keep their image alive as hard as they can. At first, they were acted rudely on an MTV award ceremony. "Does anybody in here speak Russian?

Half an hour, you say...

Page 9

No? Then, see ya later," said Lena, instead of an acceptance speech after receiving the award. After which, they used blunt language during the press interviews. "Show business is a dirty business," said Julia during the interview for a famous magazine. "Everybody says that, but you have to be in it to really know. If you want to be a 'good' girl, you won’t succeed." Lena kindly summarized for her, "Show business is a pile of shit!"

Of course, two rude schoolgirls are an interesting thing. We'll see how long this will last. The girls might grow up. However, Julia doesn't want to become a grown woman, "It's better to be a teenager forever.” But Lena disagrees, "Adults are always taken more seriously than children."

But this is where Lena is wrong. A lot of teenagers take their songs seriously, and change their lives by changing their sexual orientation. This doesn't faze our girls. "I don't think that the number of lesbians and gays will dramatically increase just because of us."

The Tatu girls think that they are not only about being lesbians, but also about reducing prejudices and increasing inner freedom. "I was an early bird. I developed love very fast, and so did my social life and sex life. I am 17, and I already experienced a lot of unpleasant things in life. There are things that I can't talk about with my parents, but the important thing is to learn to accept them yourself," shares Julia.

The girls are not in the West. They are touring Europe and looking for a partner to perform with them. One of the choices is Elton John. Maybe he'll sing "Malchick Gay" with them someday...
