Mystery Around t.A.T.u. ("7 Extra" Magazine - Belgium)

Time of publication: 14.01.2003
The more their success grows, the more the mystery surrounding them thickens...

"Lena and Julia are, without a doubt, the most controversial singers today! Because, as their single "All The Things She Said" is an undeniable hit, the nature of their relationship is still as ambiguous as ever. Fake friendship or genuine love, you all wanted to know more about them, and thus, we went directly to the source to ask our questions!"

7 Extra: Before being a hit in our country, your single ATTSS actually started out in Russia as the talk of the town...
t.A.T.u.: Yes. When it came out, it was kind of like the first single that worked in our country. Everyone was incredibly happy, the public loved us. It was a real blessing!

7 Extra: How is it to walk around in Moscow now, do people recognize you?
t.A.T.u.: It's not a problem. Some stop us and ask for our autographs and others simply say: "Oh! It's Julia and Lena! It's t.A.T.u.! We really love you!" But other than that, there are also people who insult us. When they see us, they yell, "t.A.T.u is sh*t!" Or something like that. People's reactions to us span a great range of emotions. But in the end, the most important thing is that they are talking about us. It really doesn't matter whether they like us or not. If they like us, then great. If they don't, too bad!

7 Extra: What exactly is between the two of you?
t.A.T.u.: We're close friends! Very, very close friends!

7 Extra: So, are you lesbians?
t.A.T.u.: Ah, ah, wouldn't you like to know! That's the question everybody's asking! We answer maybe yes, maybe no, it's for you to judge! We aren't going to say anything more about it!

7 Extra: Other than music, what do you both like in life?
t.A.T.u.: We love one another, with a genuine love. She loves me and I love her back!

7 Extra: Do you like performing on stage?
t.A.T.u.: Generally, yes. But it depends on the ambiance and the place where we are giving our show. It's sometimes in an enormous stadium, where there are 5000 people, but it could also be in a huge square where there are some 50 000 fans. We've done lots of concerts like that, and it's different every time.

7 Extra: Just like the more popular bands, you do both little clubs and big stadiums, right?
t.A.T.u.: Yes. But most of the time, it's in huge stadiums, face to face with a large crowd that's there to listen to us sing. It's fantastic.

7 Extra: How old are you?
t.A.T.u.: We're 17 and 18 years old!

7 Extra: How are you living your success?
t.A.T.u.: We're living rather well! It's pretty cool! It's been our childhood dream. We've worked hard to get where we are, and now, it's become a reality. We do what we like the most, and it's not a job that we find very hard at all, except when we're a little tired and we'd prefer not to do anything, but everyone has moments like that! Sometimes, we'd like to just stay in bed, but other than that, we're having a blast. We wouldn't want to do anything else. We were really made for this!

7 Extra: When did you start singing?
t.A.T.u.: Oh! It's been a while now! We started in a children's band. It was very professional choir, and it was very popular in Russia. We stayed about 4 years and we really learned a lot. It really helped us for our current career. It's only now that we've started to sing together.

7 Extra: We get the impression that you're the only group that's made it in Europe and the States...
t.A.T.u.: Actually, we don't really think about it, but if this is the case, we're really happy about it! That's something that would definitely not displease us!

The Man in the Shadows

7 Extra: Your album was initially in Russian, who translated it into English?
t.A.T.u.: We worked with producer Trevor Horn who was a member of the Buggles and who produced the very popular track "Video Killed The Radio Star". He was also the base of successes such as: Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Seal, and even Simple Minds. He's a great person! We adapted all the Russian texts into English. And then, we worked together in London and in Los Angeles. It was really a wonderful experience!
