The t.A.T.u. Phenomenon ("Star Academy" Magazine - France)Time of publication: 13.01.2003 |
We discovered Julia and Lena, the two singers of the Russian group t.A.T.u., in the super-sexy clip of their single "All The Things She Said". Girlish and devilishly seductive, the two mutinous teens answer our questions with a blunt honesty. Not so easy to dent these two girls' iron personalities!
The t.A.T.u. Phenomenon
A rarity, t.A.T.u. are practically the only Russian pop artists having been successful in getting into the States. Their first album has already sold more than a million copies, since the creation of the group two years ago. ANd they've already sang in front of over 50 000 people in Russia. Evidently, t.A.T.u. is getting under our skin!
Who is Lena?
An angel's face, with auburn locks that bring the fire out in her mischievous eyes, Lena Katina, 17 years-old, is surely the more talkative of the two t.A.T.u. girls. (Jumpin' to conclusions, these folk. -Echo) Brimming with energy, she admits to speaking English fluently and having a weakness for reading.
Who is Julia?
After eight years of studies in music and a few movie roles, Julia Volkova, only child, has become a star in her country in only a few months. This young, reserved (I think they forget that she can't speak English very well, if at all. -Echo) and rebellious girl of 17 loves to explode on the clubbing scene!
SAM (Star Academy Magazine): In a duo, each takes on a role, which roles do either of you have?
t.A.T.u.: First off, it should be said that neither of us is the leader of the group. And then, each of us has our own character, and we intend on keeping them. We are very different, but also very complementary.
SAM: What is the hit-parade like in Russia?
t.A.T.u.: Pretty much the same as in your country. The only difference is that the stars are from our country. Many Russian artists make music without every compromising, not always fun stuff there...
"We say what we want to say."
SAM: Why did you choose to make music?
t.A.T.u.: Because we have things to say.
SAM: What is the best quality of your group?
t.A.T.u.: Sincerity. We say what we want to say, and we don't hide our feelings. When something pleases us, we say so, and when it doesn't, we do the same thing!
SAM: You say that you prefer being either loved or hated, to being disregarded...
t.A.T.u.: Indifference is the worst emotion on the face of the planet... This is why we like provoking reactions out of people. It's important for people to express themselves and be honest.
SAM: The title of your album (200 km/h in the Wrong Lane) seems to mean that you love danger... Is this the case?
t.A.T.u.: It's true that we like putting ourselves in danger, just like we love everything that makes life less normal... Of course, we would never get some crazy idea to drive at 200 km/h down the street, because we feel responsable about our behavior. And even if we do some bad things, it only concerns us. After all, we aren't here to be role models!
"We sometimes do bad things, but it only concers us."
SAM: What opinion do you have of teenage fans?
t.A.T.u.: None in particular.
SAM: We sometimes say passionate = excessive. (Referring to the attitudes of some fans.) What do you think?
t.A.T.u.: Just leave them alone! Let them do what they want! We aren't here to tell them how to act. No one has a right to tell anybody what the can and cannot like!
SAM: What do you think about the teen superstar phenomenons, like Britney Spears, Sarah Michelle Gellar...?
t.A.T.u.: If people likethem, then good for them. It's not our problem. People are free.
"Do what you want, listen to your emotions."
SAM: Do you like being provocative?
t.A.T.u.: Not really... We say what we want to say, and that's it. If people find us provocative, that's their business.
SAM: If people don't agree with your ideas, does it bother you?
t.A.T.u.: Not at all! We aren't looking to please people, but just to say what we want to.
SAM: What message would you like to give you fans?
t.A.T.u.: Do what you want, listen to your emotions! If you feel like falling in love, do so... That's what being free is! And most of all, be yourself, like us. And that, no one can change...
