VSD Editor's Note
By Marc Dolisi
At our doors, a cold wind that had stolen years of life amidst the homeless; on our beaches, the less than noble fops of Prestige; away from our borders, the Swamps of the Ivory Coast; and, in the Gulf, Rambo's armada that threatens to beat on Irak.
January 2003, the atmosphere is morose. This era is crumbling under the weight of terrorist attacks, of economical troubles and of the lack of touchstones for youngsters, lack of reasons for them to settle down. I wouldn't want to be 12, 15 or 20 years old, these days. TV reality has been substitued with the Conservatory and a weak agreement, by those that we no longer dare to call leaders of opinion, that have deprived us of opinions, and thus ideals.
Despite this hibernation of consciences, VSD has chosen to stand on the soapbox and speak up.
First, September 11, untouchable mausoleum left in the memory of thousands of victims. Some of New York's firefighters took up the task of going through the rubble of the World Trade Center. Feeling as though they weren't heroes enough, they had to say it, prove it. Then, Tatu. Two young Russian girls and lesbians that kiss in their video, touch each other provocatively on stage, have made Britney Spears' belly button and Christina Aguilera's butt obsolete. I wouldn't want to have a 10 year-old daughter either, because it's the 10 year-old girls that are buying Tatu's first single by the bundle and they're a little young to have decided about their sexuality.
On our cover page, we reveal the existence of a serial rapist that operates in the nicer sectors of Paris. Our goal: to inform, to subsequently prevent, even if the portraits that we publish should be carefully considered.
Finally, all our apologies to Abderazak Besseghir, the worker from Roissy that the majority of the media, in anticipation of an investigation and the madness to make sure justice is held, has assumed to be a terrorist. Even at the age of 25, VSD's age, it is hard to always be vigilant. Sorry...
The times will get milder, let us hope that minds will sharpen.
