“Tatu”: Madonna on #1? Not for Long! ("Sobesednik" - Russia)

Time of publication: 23.01.2003
All of a sudden people realized that "Tatu" was serious. Even their competitors paid respect to them. As the producer of the group "Licei" Aleksei Makarevich said: "Tatu--Tatu is the best project to come to Russia in the past ten years. Everything is perfect--from the group's members to their image (I am not commenting it, I am just saying that it works). The girls are terrific too, I totally love them! Quoting Joanna Friske of 'Blestyaschie': 'It's good to know that some of us made it in the Europe, I am not saying that the girls did it themselves though. 'Tatu' is good music, interesting clips.'"

After New Year's, Tatu stayed in Moscow for a while--to record a new album. To Sobesednik's request for a meeting, the girls replied that they wanted to read what I had already written till now. After that, they appointed the place and time, saying that there wouldn't be much time for it. The interview started with clarifications.

# Maybe we are bisexual? #

Julia: You write that I am going to leave the group. It is not like that at all, and my vision is normal, like it has always been...
Lena: I have vision problems.
Julia: I do have some problems with my voice, but that doesn't mean that I am going to leave the group. We are starting to record a new album, and everything is fine!

Is Shapovalov looking for a bride, or what?
Lena: I think so. We don't know.

This is how rumors are born. Maybe you are starting them?
Julia: Do I go around squinting my eyes? Our producer does not need to spread any rumors about us. What for? It's the journalists.
Lena: We don't want people to talk and write about us all the time.
Julia: No, let them write, I don't care.

People tend to think that music like yours is all over Europe because you've drawn in their interest with your image.
Julia: I think that we drew in their attention with our music. Our music is Russian, it's different from theirs. They use different lyrics, different instruments, style, and when they heard us... Anyway, music is the key.
Lena: Everyone is telling us that we are different because of our music.

So, do you feel insulted when people cal, you "a Russian Lesbian Duo"?
Julia: No one calls us like that. Ah, why would we care! Where do they get that from, that we are lesbians?!
Lena: Even we don't know who we are now!
Julia: Let them call us that, for God's sake! We don't care, really... Maybe we are bisexual, who knows? Or they say, "They are told to be like that." What do they mean they told us? Maybe we wanted to be like this?

What is your relationship with your producer?
Julia: We have a good relationship with our producer. He is our friend, a person that helps us; he will never exploit us. It's not like, he says, and we do. We always decide together.

Do you like to be on stage? Or is it like labor for you?
Lena: Of course! If we didn't like it, we wouldn't even be here now. Everyone knows their place, our place is on stage... For now. If we want to do something else in 5 years, we'll do it. Julia, for one, wants to be a producer in the future. She'll produce me. Ha-ha.

So, there is going to be another album?
Julia: You'll see. Everything will be different from the first one. But everyone will be shocked like they were by the first album, and the first clip!
Lena: And also, for Russia. We will always be Russian stars, we won't ever go anywhere else. Yes, we want to be popular in the US and Europe, but this doesn't mean that we'll only be in the West. Fatherland comes first, of course!
Julia: I stay in touch with Russian stars--to always be connected.
Lena: When they call us "T-A-T-U" in the West, we say, "No, we are 'Tatu'!"
Julia: Yes, we are only "Tatu".
