t.A.T.u. - Russian Shock Pop! ("Top of the Pops" - Sweden)

Time of publication: 31.12.2002
They believe that the most shocking thing there is, is themselves, they're tired of boring questions, and Roxette are some of their old idols. t.A.T.u. are the two Russian girls who are doing all they can to be able to stay in the limelight.

TotP meets the girls of t.A.T.u. in their hotel room before their performance at the Swedish Hit Music Awards in Stockholm. During this fall, the group has gained enormous attention thanks to their daring music video "All the Things She Said", in which there occurs some lesbian scenes. t.A.T.u. are extremely big in Russia, where the group's CD has sold over a million copies. During this past year, the group has become determined to established themselves in the rest of the world. Reception of them has been positive with a circle of distinctions and nominations which have thus resulted.

In Sweden, their single "All the Things She Said" has remained high on the sales lists for a long time. Despite their huge popularity, t.A.T.u. has time to talk with TotP. Because of Yulia's weak English skills and headache, along with our press for time, it's Lena who answers the questions.

You've received a lot of attention for the lesbian scenes in your new video. What plans do you have to shock people even more in videos to follow?
- You'll find out when you see more of our videos. Such things are already old for us, since we've already been seen in Russia for a while now.

What shocks you?
- We shock ourselves.

Lena adjusts her seating a little and points out that she really doesn't feel like doing any interviews or being photographed. She sits up straight on the sofa, her face tense.

Are you tired of answering questions in a lot of interviews?
- It can be tough and boring to have the same questions time and time again.

Which question would you yourself like to ask yourself?
- Oh *sigh* That's just about the most frequently asked question. I don't know what I would want to ask myself.

I thought about playing a little game with you. Bearing in mind that your single is titled "All the Things She Said", I just thought to check with you about what you'd say if Yulia said that she'd rather play Michael Jackson's covers than sing your own songs?
- What? Why would she want to sing Michael Jackson's songs?

It's just a test! I just mean that if she said that, what would you say?
- There's no IF about it. It's entirely unthinkable that she would do such a thing.

But what IF she did?
- There's no IF, okay?!

The atmosphere in the room is no longer warm-hearted and happy. Lena has pointed out with all clarity that she doesn't like my idea of playing around with possibilities. But still, being as dumb as I am, I wanna test one more question in the same genre.

If she said that she wanted to be a solo artist and make her own CD, how would you react?
- We're already solo artists who play together. But no one knows what could happen in the future. I never speculate into the future, so I can't answer how I'd react.

To talk about something completely different, I know that you have a dog, Blankeria which is a chow breed. Who takes care of it when you're out travelling?
- There are many people at home who help take care of it, both in my family and at the record company.

So the dog is fine, for all who are wondering?
- Yes.

Who do you like in Sweden, concerning groups or artists?
- We were here earlier this autumn, and we didn't know that the country was this beautiful. I like Roxette, who are some of my old idols.

Before it's time to end the interview, I wanna make sure that Lena has a good attitude toward tonight's performance at the event. She gives something completely different from a relaxed expression, sitting at the side of the sofa.

If Yulia said that you two would rather be at home than to be making an appearance tonight, which would you choose?
- That would depend on which kind of mood I'm in, but the way I feel now, I'd prefer to do the show.
