In 1999, Britney Spears (17 years old) started a new trend of lolitas that dared everything without seeming to touch any of it at all. In a short matter of time, the teen of "... Baby One More Time" has transformed into a "sexed-up nymph". But that is nothing beside what we are seeing these days. Even Christina Aguilera (I'm sorry, I meant Xtina) no longer is exclusive to the provocative movement. The mistresses of this act are two Russians of 17 and 18 that have allowed themselves anything and everything on stage as well as in interviews, cuddles included. The girls of t.A.T.u. are effectively wreaking havoc on anything in their path. For 4 years now, Lena Katina (the redhead) and Julia Volkova (the brunette) have been causing a storm in their country, where they have gathered over fifty thousands fans in stadiums when they perform. Their basis of marketing is just as much due to their brand of pop music tinted with techno, as to their emphasized taste for scandal. Witness the clip "All The Things She Said", taken from the album "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane", in which Julia, the more rebellious one, and Lena, the more discrete one, in school uniform, are nuzzlin' and kissin' beneath the rain, behind a barbed fence. Their goal? To affirm their "difference". "Be in love, but be yourselves, like us!" After having sold over one million copies of their first album in the East, these young girls of middle-class Muscovite families (Lena, youngest of three, has a musician father) leave today for the conquest of the West. To this end, t.A.T.u. have adapted their album in English. "t.A.T.u. means, in Russian, this girl loves that girl. This corresponds well to our relationship," explains Julia. "The first time I saw Lena, I said to myself, 'I want her!' And I got her. Our message is clear and positif: one girl loving another girl is something perfectly normal. In Russia, austerity reigns. The people need provocative ideas and the scent of scandal to react." These girls have achieved this by kissing one another right on the mouth or by mutually copping a feel of the other's breasts. Is overbidding the competition the only way for a young female singer to break from the crowd?
