Rising with the successful hit "All The Things She Said", the t.A.T.u. phenomenon has just pierced into the Occidental landscape of the music industry, spiced with the taste of scandal on its heels. Lena and Julia, two Russian lolitas, are leave an ambiguity surround their relationship with each other and with boys. What is the meaning of the name t.A.T.u.?
Lena: "It's a woman faced with another woman... As if she were looking into the mirror all the while holding the hand of her reflection. It's kind of like as if she were telling herself, 'This girl or that one?' (In truth, t.A.T.u. is the transformation of a name that they had wished to take at the beginning, Tattoo, the actual word, but this idea was dropped - ndlr)."
How would you define your music?
"Our music is raw, there is no softness, niceness about it. We come from a country where people are not light-hearted, because life over there is much harder than here. It's certainly because of this that our points of view diverge from that of other nationalities that are more "sheltered". That's it, that's t.A.T.u.'s style! In our album, not one piece resembles the other. We don't have one single style, and that's why we call it the t.A.T.u. style!"
In Paris, you can still walk around uninterrupted in the street. Which is not the case in Russia. How do you deal with that kind of situation?
"We like being here, almost more than Russia. We can do what we like, at any given moment. Speaking of which, it's one of the things that we like about this career; the possibility of seeing different things in different countries."
The video, that's rather steamy, for "All The Things She Said" provoked Tatu-mania by airing on MTV Russia...
"Yes. It perfectly portrays our world. Whether or not it shocks. We like videos that are different. In the next one for our upcoming single, "Not Gonna Get Us", we're at the wheel of a huge truck, charging through and across Siberia, and nothing can stop us!"
Why are we crazy for you?
"We have two very different personalities, but at the same time, very complimentary. That's what people love us or hat us, but also because our songs are not stupid. They show what we think, all the while not giving a sh*t about what others think. Fake smiles are not for us, because we do not cheat others."
What do you like about each other?
"We don't want to reveal what we like about one another, that's our own business. We want to live our own lives! Other people should do what the feel like as well. Most importantly, we shouldn't view things as unimportant. We are very close and very attentive of one another. We are real friends. We aren't going to say more."
And what are your differences?
"We really love each other a great deal, even though we are very different. Julia loves to party and I, I prefer staying at home and reading quietly. I'm the youngest of three, my father is a well-known composer and musician in Russia. But Julia is an only child, and of a middle-class family... We can't really answer this question... Sometimes, we are completely the same person, and other times, we're completely at odds..."
Do you have a secret to seduction to share with us?
"To present ourselves as we really are and to have a good look, so that you can feel at home in your clothes, your skin and your mind. We like wearing comfortable clothes, because that portrays what we are like, though we don't only want to have this one style. Julia is nobody but herself, she isn't J. Lo, and she thus doesn't need to fake being someone else. It's the same for me."
At 17 and 18 years old, what do you wish to make of your private and artistic lives?
"Concerning our careers, we dream of a shattering worldwide success. As for our private lives, it only concerns us and anyway, it's the same as everyone else; to have children, get married. To clarify, work together, live together and have children."
What do you want from love?
"That's our business and we don't want to answer that kind of question. It's too personal... Everyone wants the same thing from love. And everyone is the perfect lover for someone else."
