Interview with Ivan Shapovalov About EuroVision ("Moskovskyi Komsomolec" - Russia)

Time of publication: 30.03.2003
First everyone thought, "This is a joke!" Rude, of course, but clever: "Tatu" say they are going to attend EuroVision. Shapovalov, a sarcastic producer, is probably toying with the gullible show-business industry, spreading rumors: "We'll go, we'll go, shocking everyone!" But in ORT, there were very different discussions going on: was the new-come rock-pop singer Dusha (Spirit) good enough for the contest?

Despite that, someone was in need of controversy. Some TV viewers started to ask, to beg for "Tatu" patriotism. So, on Monday, Tatu's producer dropped the news, officially announcing: On the 24th of May, in Riga, on another EuroVision contest, Russia is going to be represented by Tatu with their new song “Ne ver, ne boisya, ne prosi”.

But "Tatu" are international mega-stars, who came down from the tops of international charts to the half-home-made scene of EuroVision... Do they belong?

"But stars don’t use sweaty public transportation with house-wives! Why would Tatu need this?"
Shapovalov: "To restore the adequate atmosphere of this contest, which is more political, then musical."

"What kind of adequate atmosphere is there to restore on a small tele-contest for house-wives?"
"Not to sing songs, which are written for house-wives. It is a pain to watch our stars, which composed songs especially for EuroVision for 5 years, to fit the 'format'... We should sing our own songs."

"'Mumyi Trol' went to EuroVision with a controversial song. But in the end everyone still said: "MT" just sh*t himself, rather then expressed his identity. "Tatu" are serious international mega stars now. Why would they need a small, useless contest for rising stars?"
"Live broadcast across Europe is a good opportunity... We should do it at least for Russia."

"What if you fail? What if no matter how wonderful Tatu's performance will be, they won't be number one — what a shock it will be for everyone!"
"This then will be an end for EuroVision. If Tatu's performance won't be good enough, it'll hit the whole contest. But I can't be bothered to think about it. For us, to sing 'Ne ver, ne boisya, ne prosi' live across Europe is an act."

"According to the rules, you must sing in English?"
"We'll sing in Russian."

"What’s the song about?"
"A new song from a new album. It'll create a strong contrast with the contest's image. It's an aggressive break-beat with guitar. In all, this song is a new understanding of Tatu's life."

Last year on "EuroVision-02" in Tallinn, when our good boys from "Prime Minister" were seen, heard by the aforementioned house-wives, Russia was again, not taken into account! "Tatu" will be something more scary then Marilyn Manson to the house-wives. Prepare for a trashing that'll destroy all family values!
