Why do Tatu girls need scandals? ("Dni.Ru" - Russia)

Time of publication: 12.05.2003
Very strange things started happening around Tatu, after it was announced that the girls are going to represent Russia on Eurovision. At first a lot, if not all musical journalists wrote about how it is impossible to understand why one of the most popular groups in the world would want to participate in such a doubtful musical contest.

The Universal Music announced, that it doesn’t support the participation of it’s artists in such contests. And then a whole string of unexplainable events started to happen; including the cancellation of UK concerts, shooting of the new video on the streets and sexual scandals. From one point of view, it is clear that things are not going too well for Tatu. On the other hand, Tatu are constantly flashing in the headlines.

It was said, that the producer of the group, Ivan Shapovalov was not keen on Tatu’s participation in Eurovision contest. But fatherland in the face of First Channel said: “You have to”. And the patriot of its country said: “Yes”. I am joking, of course, but it’s hard to think of any other good reason to go to this contest. Because if Tatu will fail, and this might happen quite easily; then their popularity in Russia, which already has a lot of problems, would be gone. But the girls are counting on victory, and say that they will do anything in their power.

An interesting question, what?

The concert in UK, were cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Organizers and Ivan Shapovalov keep accusing each other – first say, that “Tatu” didn’t answer questions, asked for impossible and (a scary part) asked the female audience to come in school girl uniform! Shapovalov says that only bad promoters are unable to sell tickets to the concert of the most popular group. Mean while the group didn’t even attempt to advertise the concerts.

This all seems to be very strange. Even if we take into account the terrible Puritanism of UK, and all the talk about pedophilia, which prevents them from having girls dressed in school uniform, there is a feeling, that Tatu themselves sabotaged the concerts. It’s almost like Shapovalov did everything in his power to prevent the concerts from coming true. Why?

It’s very simple. A successful concert can at most draw the attention of ten thousand people – it is the size of the Wembley arena, which was supposed to host the show. But constant scandals and investigation of the relationship between the group and the promoters, stories with raped reporters and the calls for all UK teenagers to dress in schoolgirl uniforms draw the attention of more then a hundred thousand people across the Europe. Since this year, the voting on Eurovision is going to be available everywhere in Europe (except Russia, in which it is hard to accomplish technically), that this kind of “promotion” is extremely good for the group. Shapovalov is a professional advertiser, and he knows how to attract attention to the group.

And the attention is needed. The biggest problem of Eurovision is the length of the concert. Represent from 26 countries perform in 3 hours only. All of which unknown to the majority of the audience, with strange music, only familiar to their own countries. It is almost impossible to orientate. That’s why in the past few years, we witness the victory going to beautiful young girls, which impressed with their looks, or apart from beautiful girls, victories of artists performing towards the end of the show. This year it will be different. Tatu know it all. And those who didn’t know it before will realize it after they see the huge wave of publications about the group.

Since the topic of cancelled concerts in all “dried out”, there are two new ones – about the female reported sexual assaulted by Shapovalov and about the video Tatu are shooting on the streets with teenage girls dressed in school girl outfits. When these stories will end, others will come. There is still time until the 24th of May. And it looks like Tatu’s chances are growing every day.

But then again, the nature of human appreciation is not revealed.
