Is This The Beginning Of The End? ("GALA" Magazine - Russia)

Time of publication: 13.05.2003
In May 2003, the Tatu girls are going to represent Russia on Eurovision. But their victory might be the last triumph that Julia and Lena will share.

We are used to the passionate kisses and embraces, which the girls shared constantly. Conservative as it is, it took Russia over a year to accept the love the Tatu girls share. We are all used to the free-styles of the girls, we loved their songs, rich with energy and driving force, and eventually started to feel proud of them: it is because of Tatu, that Europe took a hard look on their attitude towards Russian pop music. But we didn’t have enough time to enjoy their success in the East, as a hole formed in the girls’ relationship, which was first discovered by our Eastern colleagues.

In March this year, Tatu appeared on TV show Wetten Das...? Every time they appear, 15 million European residents put aside all of their work to watch the sexy duo on TV.

The shooting took place in Lucerne (Switzerland), which was also attended by the daughter of famous Charlie Chaplin, Garaldina, and by British comic Ronan Atkinson, more widely known as Mr. Bean. But despite the presence of such big stars, the appearance of Tatu was a very big deal. Their arrival was greeted by more then 10 TV cameras and over 50 press reporters. But the journalists could not ignore the fact that Julia and Lena, smiling to the cameras, are more then cold with each other. Someone decided that the girls were saving the hugs and kisses for the stage, but even during the performance, the audience did not witness the spark which was present between the girls before.

"It was obvious, that either the girls were inhumanly tired, or had a very huge fight," said one of the show crewmen later.

Like for every other popular group, Tatu’s end was predicted long before the two Russian girls even won the tops of the single charts in the East. For a long time, no one took the talks seriously, but now, when the group in on it’s popularity peak, the perspectives of the end are more realistic then ever. The world of show business doesn’t have a lot of examples of pop-groups which are popular and don’t have a reason to fall apart, fall apart one day, and become history.

One of the most popular reasons for falling apart among popular groups is professional jealousy. Because of that, ABBA fell apart in 1983. Is the same fortune awaiting Tatu? Very likely, since it’s a matter of time before one of the girls decide that the other one is more popular. The fact that the girls from Tatu still don’t have their own apartments, cars, and Julia doesn’t even have a computer, gives hope that money are not going to be a reason to break up, for now it seems that financial side of the project doesn’t interest the girls that much.

It’ll be much harder to fight love. A feeling that creates, and a feeling that breaks. In 1987, it ruined German duo Modern Talking. Will Tatu be able to keep their duo together? What if one of them will meet her other side?

It is easy to fight tiredness, but no one can fight time. Producers of British boy-band “Five” took down the group as soon as it was too obvious that the boys became grown men. This is most likely the more pleasant reason, due to which Tatu might fall apart. Already now, the mini-school-skirts and ties look odd on the girls. In any case, the major factor in Tatu is to overthrow everything that was established in human society so far, to break the rules. This is then magically entwined with Tatu’s youth, but everyone has such crazy moments in life, and they pass after some time. Sooner or later, it’ll happen to Tatu.

Anyway, we wish Tatu all the best on Eurovision. Like the girls sing, "we need her". We need Tatu. The way it is. Just the way we like it.

Note: There is a photo. On one of the Julia hugs Lena with one hand, and touches her hair with another. Under the photo: Julia confidently holds Lena. She is obviously the leader in the pair. And if she leaves the group, it’ll be the end.
