Bankisha, Nippon TV 29th June 2003
(Before the interview with Tatu and Ivan, there was a clip of their activities in Japan, but the following is just an outline of the main part)
Q: (In English, to Lena) You wanted to singЃH
Lena (L): (signing autographs for fans) Yes.
But anyway ... If it happens...
It might be better than...
(Japanese subtitles: Yeah. But there's nothing we can do, is there, now that it's turned out like this...)
(These were Japanese subtitles so I think this was a free translation based on bits that weren't actually broadcast)
Yulia (Y): We didn't make the decision, we were just told over the phone by our producer.
We were told that if we went back to the hotel (without performing), the staff (from Universal) would lose their jobs, but that's nothing to do with us. We couldn't even get permission to film our video.
Footage of Ivan arriving in Japan before Tatu on the 23rd and going round places in Tokyo on the 24th, looking for somewhere to shoot the video, as well as footage of Tatu's arrival on the 25th.
Police officer: Don't stand around on the pavement. You are causing a nuisance for other pedestrians. (LO: v.Japanese this - when they tell you not to do something, it's always "to avoid inconveniencing other people")
Y: (to Lena, who is signing autographs) Lena, they say we mustn't stand around here. Let's get out of here fast.
(to Ivan) That policeman's scary, isn't he?
Ivan (I): Let's all go and sing karaoke together. I'll sing Tatu.
(from here onwards it's simultaneous interpreting)
Q: So you couldn't film in Japan?
Y: That's right. We were meant to though.
L: Ginza wasn't pedestrianised even though it's usually (on normal weekends) supposed to be.
Q: It was called off by the police, wasn't it?
L: It's strange, isn't it? I mean, it's called "Pedestrians' Paradise" so we went for a walk there, but it had been cancelled.
Q: You didn't feel like filming in Japan without permission?
L: We wanted to get permission and film, but we were told that it would take 10 days to get permission. We have lots of fans in Japan so we wanted to film here, but it's not possible for us to wait 10 days.
Q: Wouldn't it have been better if you'd obtained permission before coming to Japan? Personally, I think that anyone would realise that it would be impossible to get permission to film in the city centre here after getting to Japan.
I: Possibly.
Y: (to Ivan) Did you know that it would take 10 days?
I: (shaking his head) It might go well next time.
Q: (seeing Lena entwining her leg with Yulia's) Are you trying to appeal to people by showing that you're close?
L: I just like doing this. It's fun.
Q: (showing the postcards of Ginza, Asakusa, Kamakura and Mount Fuji that Ivan bought at the hotel) Where did you want to film?
Y: Here and there - all over the place.
Q: So Japan won't feature in the "Show Me Love" video?
L: We'll see, but we'd love to come to Japan again and include it.
Q: (Question from some of the fans who were meant to take part in the video shoot) Why was yesterday's event (LO: the live appearance) cancelled?
(The interpreter makes a mistake and asks instead why the video shoot was cancelled)
L&Y: Because we couldn't get permission.
L: We were told not to do the shoot, otherwise we'd be arrested. It's a pity, because Ginza had a really good atmosphere, so it would have been a good shoot.
Q: Why was your live TV appearance suddenly cancelled?
I: That programme didn't suit Tatu's charms. We'll talk about this in detail at the press conference.
Host: Isn't keeping promises important in showbusiness? It was 37 years ago today that The Beatles first came to Japan, but they gave fantastic live performances, even though at the time people said they were delinquents. (Reads part of the apology issued by Universal)
Q: Did you film in Red Square without applying for permission because you knew that you wouldn't get permission?
I: Firstly, we aren't The Beatles, we're Tatu. Artists express themselves, and one should be able to understand this if one loves that artist. Red Square is in our own country, so we could film without permission, but we are guests in Japan, so we didn't film without permission. We have expressed our respect for the orderliness of Japan.
_______End of Interview_________
Incidentally, according to Mezamashi TV's report on June 30th, they didn't get permission to film at the Pedestrians' Paradise in Ginza and Akihabara, nor at Yoyogi Gymnasium or Zojoji (sp?), but they apparently did get permission to film at Shiba Park, from which one can see Tokyo Tower. However, Ivan rejected Shiba Park as "not in line with Tatu's image".
---
Apparently, on yesterday's Bankisha, they said that after the broadcast the previous week, the girls went to the toilets and went into the same stall together. Make of that what you will...
